Domestic heating oil falls into two basic categories - Kerosene (sometimes called ‘Kerosene 28’) & Gas Oil (also known as ‘Red Diesel’). It is important to find out which kind of heating oil you need before you order, as using the wrong type could cause serious damage to your boiler.
If your property already has an oil-fired heating system, there are several easy ways to identify which oil you need:
See if your storage tank has a label on the side of it - this should show the oil type.
Check the colour of the oil in the level sight gauge, which is usually located on the side of your tank (If it is straw/yellow in colour, you have Kerosene; if it is red/pink, then it is Gas Oil).
Check the boiler documentation, if available.
Check any previous delivery notes
Ask a previous owner of the property, or your landlord
If you are unsure which type of oil you need, you can always call our Customer Service team on 0800 500 3178.
Yes. You can order Premium Kerosene by selecting it from the dropdown in the Free Quotation Form. There are two types of Premium Kerosene that we offer:
Premium Kerosene for Boilers contains additives that are designed to keep the oil fresh allowing the boiler to work as efficiently as possible, with less chance of breakdowns.
Premium Kerosene for AGAs has been specially designed to be used in oil-fired cookers such as AGAs or Rayburns, and contains additives that prevent build-up around the cooker's internal components, and reduces the risk of maintenance issues between services.
If your AGA and Heating System use the same fuel source, you should use an AGA-optimised oil for maximum performance
Red Diesel is known as Gas Oil when used in domestic and commercial heating systems
Gas Oil and Red Diesel are identical. Government regulations allow the use if Red Diesel in vehicles, such as tractors cars or trucks, that are used exclusively on private property. None of these vehicles can be powered by Red Diesel on public roads, except for Tractors operating less than seven miles from the farm they are registered to, enabling them to move between farm lands.

Yes. Our sophisticated software checks all suppliers on our database who deliver in your area, and instantly provides you with the best price on offer that day. The price/litre we quote is the maximum price we will charge, and is guaranteed until order processing is carried-out the next available working day. The final price/litre may be lower when processed, due to group discounts coming into play, but will never be higher.
Oil markets are ultra-competitive, so please compare prices for the same date that we have provided them, as prices vary daily. Nevertheless, we will always be pleased for our members give us details of local Suppliers they would recommend, enabling them to be invited to be added to our Registered Suppliers’ list.
When you fill in the Free Customer Quotation Form, please select “4 wheeler (Medium)” in the ‘Tanker Type’ dropdown. This will ensure that the quotation you receive will be from the lowest price supplier that is able to make your delivery in this size of tanker, and no additional charges will apply.
Because it is cheaper for suppliers to deliver one large order of heating oil in a local area, they will normally pass on the savings made on delivery costs, by providing a bulk discount. Therefore we have designed a Group Saving programme to help you get the very best price, no matter how much you order. Every time you place a qualifying order it is automatically grouped with others placed with the same supplier within the same postcode area on the same day and, if enough orders in your area are grouped together, an extra discount is applied to each order, helping you to save more money on your heating oil.
By encouraging your friends, family and neighbours in the same postcode to order on the same day, all of your orders will qualify for our Group Savings scheme - the bigger the group, the larger the discounts for everybody. You can increase these discounts even further during Saving Weekends.
Not necessarily. Just advise any neighbours to all order oil during the same 24-hour period and, provided all of the delivery addresses are within the same postcode area (which means that the first part of the postcode, eg BS31, is the same) your orders will automatically be grouped. Provided the total orders exceed the threshold of 2000 litres, you will all receive the same Group Savings discount on the price per litre.
Group savings are credited to your CompareTheOilPrice.com account to be used against a future order. You can view this by clicking the 'Tank Account' tab when logged-in. If you prefer to receive a monetary refund you can achieve this in your account once confirmation of delivery is received from the Supplier.
Group Savings are only received through combined order volumes. If nobody else orders from your postcode on the same day, no bulk discounts will be obtained from the Supplier.
Group savings are only available on Standard Delivery terms, as these orders are held to be grouped together on the same day. If you order your oil specifying one of the Express Delivery options, it is immediately sent to the qualifying Supplier so they can prioritise it for delivery as requested.
Unfortunately not. Not all Suppliers use four-wheeled tankers for delivery so, like Express Delivery options, orders utilising four-wheeled tankers are sent directly to the appropriate Supplier when an order is made.
To get a price for your heating oil, just fill-out the simple enquiry form usually found at the top right of a page on this website. This will provide you with an instant on-line quote which you can then turn into an order. The price we quote on-line will be the price that you pay. You may also obtain prices by e-mail or by telephoning our customer service department, but these will be exactly the same price that you would be quoted on-line.
Simply press the ‘Order Now’ button alongside your selected price in the displayed list on your screen, then follow the on-screen instructions. If you are a new customer, you will also need to open an account with us during this process.
Essentially yes, but the minimum single order volume we can accept is 500 litres. Please try to be as accurate as possible to avoid delivery problems, as suppliers will not be able to actually deliver a greater volume than you order - the maximum capacity of your storage tank is normally shown on the label attached to it. However if, on the delivery day, your tank will not hold the full amount scheduled for delivery, you will receive a refund automatically for any undelivered volume.
Domestic oil tanks are usually sized between 1,000 litres and 3,000 litres, and there is normally a sight gauge on the side showing the amount of oil already in the tank. If no gauge is fitted then you will need to use a dipstick (eg a bamboo cane) to establish the amount of fuel remaining. The minimum amount you can order is 500 litres, so do not order if your tank cannot accept this amount.
No. We request that you place an order for a defined volume of oil, rounded to the nearest 100 litres. We do accept that it may not always be possible to accurately estimate the amount required to fill your tank, so if the amount you have paid for with your order is marginally more than required, you will receive a refund for the undelivered volume.
None of our Suppliers find it cost effective to deliver less than this amount to one location.
Yes, but a separate order will have to be placed for each delivery; please ensure the box entitled ‘Alternative address’ is ticked when placing orders for different buyers. To obtain Group Savings all orders must be placed on the same date or during a Buying Weekend, between the specified Friday and Sunday dates.
Confirmation of your order is sent automatically to the main email address listed in your account. If you do not receive this email, you should first check that you have entered your email address correctly in your account. To do this, click on the ‘Profile’ tab.
If those details are correct, you then need to check your ‘spam’ or ‘junk’ mail folder to ensure that the email is not there. If it is in that folder, you will need to specify our email address as an allowed sender in your email application - the email software manufacturer provides instructions on how to do this in their ‘help’ section.
If you cannot find the email at all, click the ‘Order History’ tab in your account area. All of your recent orders are listed there and you can view all order confirmations on your screen, and take a printout where required.
If your latest order is not listed then the payment may not have been processed to completion. Please telephone us on 0800 500 3178 where one of our Customer Service team will be ready to assist you.
When filling-out the on-line enquiry form, you will be asked for the postcode of the delivery address; this is because your oil price is calculated using the postcode for the delivery address, not the billing address postcode. If you go ahead and order, we will ask you for the full delivery address plus the billing address (if the latter is different). The registered address for the debit/credit card you use to pay for an order must always match the billing address for the order, regardless of what the delivery address is.
When you fill in the Free Customer Quotation Form, please select “4 wheeler (Medium)” in the ‘Tanker Type’ dropdown. This will ensure that the quotation you receive will be from the lowest price supplier that is able to make your delivery in this size of tanker.
Payment is accepted by all types of debit card, and is debited from your nominated card when you place your order - please be aware that payment will not be taken on delivery, by cheque or on account. If, on delivery, your tank cannot take the full amount ordered, we will refund your CompareTheOilPrice.com account for the undelivered amount accordingly.
Payment will be taken immediately you place an order using the debit card details you have entered into our secure payment system. If your tank cannot take the full order on delivery, the quantity not delivered is credited to your account and can be used against future orders. You can see this by clicking the 'Tank Account' tab when logged-in. If you prefer to have the money refunded to your card you can do this from your account area once the delivery has been confirmed by the Supplier. We process any refund(s) immediately delivery has been confirmed by the Supplier, but refunds may take up to five working days before they show in your account, dependent on the card operator’s own terms and conditions.
We no longer accept payment with a Maestro card because Maestro cards were intended for ‘customer-present’ transactions only. You can use any Visa or MasterCard Debit cards to make your payment.
For full security, we participate in both Verified By Visa and SecureCode schemes - please note that those processes are NOT operated by us. When you provide your card details, the card issuer may ask for part of your Verified By Visa password or the SecureCode. If you cannot enter that information they provide a link where you can access their systems to enable you to complete the order. If you still encounter problems in placing an order, please call our Customer Service team on 0800 500 3178, where they will be waiting to help you.
Please call our Customer Service team on 0800 500 3178 immediately and have your order number available. We will check into it straight away and correct any errors found.
HMRC require that suppliers issue an invoice covering every delivery, including to CompareTheOilPrice.com customers. You can ignore this invoice if it details the same total that you paid us, or less. In any other circumstances, please call our Customer Service team on 0800 500 3178, and they will be happy to assist.
You may be able to cancel an order provided the selected Supplier has not commenced delivery already, and is willing to accept a cancellation. They may also charge administration fees if the delivery has been already scheduled by the Supplier before you requested cancellation. Please call our Customer Service team on 0800 500 3178 immediately and have your order reference number available to enable us to assist you. Any payment will only be refunded when the Supplier has confirmed acceptance of the cancellation.
When an order cancellation has been accepted by the Supplier, the payment (less any fees) is refunded automatically to your card. Refunds can take up to five working days to appear on your account, dependent on the card operator’s own terms and conditions.
Any undelivered quantities are credited back to your account and may be used against a future order. You can view these by clicking the 'Tank Account' tab when logged-in. If you prefer to receive a monetary refund you can achieve this in your account once confirmation of delivery is received from the Supplier.
If you order 1,200 litres but the tank cannot take all of this, the undelivered quantity will be automatically credited back to your CompareTheOilPrice.com account and may be used against a future order. You can view this by clicking the 'Tank Account' tab when logged-in. If you prefer to receive a monetary refund you can achieve this in your account once confirmation of delivery is received from the Supplier.
However, please order quantities that are near to the available tank capacity. If the quantity ordered is substantially greater than the tank can hold, some suppliers reserve their right to raise the price/litre in line with the price you would have been quoted at the time if ordering a much-smaller amount.
Suppliers use route planning to provide the lowest possible price, and carrying undelivered oil back to a depot is not efficient for them, so potentially impacts on price. As oil prices per litre decrease the larger the order, when the amount ordered is considerably more than can be delivered, Suppliers reserve their right to raise the price/litre in line with the price you would have been quoted at the time if ordering a much-smaller amount.
Under-delivery refunds, as well as discounts earned through Group Savings and Buying Weekends are all credited back to your CompareTheOilPrice.com account and can be used against future orders. You can see this by clicking the 'Tank Account' tab when logged-in. If you prefer a monetary refund to your account you can do this from your account area once the delivery has been confirmed by the Supplier.
Refunds for full cancellation are always made to the card that you used to make the order. Refunds requested to be made from your CompareTheOilPrice.com account are made against the card registered on the account or, if additional cards have been listed on the account, to the last card used on the account.
Our order confirmation provides the best estimate of the date for your order to be delivered, but your oil may be delivered at any date and time up to and including that date. Although Suppliers will normally deliver within the estimated time shown, in a very small number of cases during periods of very high demand, delivery may take longer than advised. If you have not received your order after the date quoted, please call our Customer Service team on 0800 500 3178, and they will be happy to assist.
All delivery amounts are monitored on the tanker's metering which is regulated by national trading standards. The Supplier will provide a delivery ticket showing the actual quantity delivered. If you happen to be away from the property during delivery, this will usually be placed in your letterbox.
Prior to order confirmation, it is not possible to identify the supplier that will deliver your oil. Your order will be placed with the Supplier who is offering the lowest price when we process the order. The order confirmation will identify the Supplier who will make the delivery.
The Supplier securing your order will be responsible for making the delivery. Details of that Supplier will be provided in the Order Confirmation.
If the delivery driver is not able to access the tank without your assistance, you will need to be in attendance. If, for any reason, you want to be in attendance for the delivery, when you complete your order please input "TELEPHONE BEFORE DELIVERY" into the ‘Delivery Instructions’ box. This instruction will then be included in the order confirmation sent to you and to the supplier. No contact will be made before your delivery unless you have specifically requested it. If you are unsure of any aspect of your delivery, you can always call our Customer Service team on 0800 500 3178, and they will be happy to assist.
Your order confirmation email provides the latest estimated date that your order should be delivered, but your oil can arrive at any time up to and including that date. You will not be contacted before the delivery is made unless you have specifically requested to be, and your delivery will be made without contact from the Supplier. If, for any reason, you want to be in attendance for the delivery, when you complete your order please input "TELEPHONE BEFORE DELIVERY" into the ‘Delivery Instructions’ box. This is dependent upon the delivery time requested in your order. The order confirmation provides the latest estimated date that your order will be delivered, although your oil can arrive at any date up to and including that date. Delivery times are shown in working days, excluding weekends and public holidays, commencing the day after an order is received by the Supplier. In a very small number of cases during very busy periods of high demand, such as during periods of extreme weather, standard delivery may increase beyond ten working days. The current timescale for Standard Delivery will always be displayed when the order is placed.
First check the anticipated delivery date indicated in your Order Confirmation. If your delivery has not been received after the date quoted, please call our Customer Service team on 0800 500 3178, and they will be happy to assist.
If the Standard Delivery service has been specified, which is up to ten working days, you will need to cancel the existing order and create a new order selecting the appropriate express delivery option. If you are unsure of this aspect of your delivery, you can always call our Customer Service team on 0800 500 3178, and they will be happy to assist.
All Suppliers’ Tankers are operated by one person, so of you have access difficulties it will be necessary to ensure that somebody will be available to assist the delivery driver.
